Backpack Program

Backpack Program

During the school week, children get at least one nutritious meal a day through the School Lunch program, but weekends and school holidays are tough times for kids without enough food at home. In households where children must take turns eating meals, or go a whole day without, children arrive hungry or “chronically hungry” at school on Monday.

The Backpack Program feeds chronically hungry school children by providing them with a backpack of nutritious and easy-to-prepare foods to take home on weekends and over school vacations, when other resources are not available. Backpacks are usually filled on Friday afternoons. The FoodBank currently works with seven local schools in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
