Officials Join Together in the Fight to End Hunger

Pictured above from the left are: Vicki Escarra, Yvette Jackson and Kevin McHugh, President of the FoodBank’s board of Directors.

On September 19th, Vicki Escarra, President and CEO of America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s FoodBank Network, visited the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties and participated in its Fight to End Hunger Forum.

As a leader of the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization with more than 200 foodbanks and food-rescue organizations in its nationwide membership, Escarra has sought to increase the amount of food that is available to hungry people by enhancing donor relationships with corporate America, government partners and individuals. "Hunger is one of a handful of social issues facing our nation today that are solvable," said Escarra.

Many of the FoodBank’s 250 member charities attended this forum, as well as Secretary of Agriculture, Charles Kuperus; Yvette Jackson, regional administrator of USDA Food and Nutrition Service; Jennifer Velez, Commissioner of the State Department of Human Serices; and Deputy Mayor of Neptune, Randy Bishop. The forum covered numerous issues such as passage of the Farm Bill, school breakfast programs, the Federal food stamp program, emergency food and commodities for seniors.

CHEERIOS HONORS KIDS!

Monica Murphy Chosen to Be On Cheerios Box

The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties is proud to announce that Monica Murphy of Spring Lake Heights has been chosen by ShopRite Partners in Caring program and General Mills to appear on a limited edition Cheerios box.  On Friday at the Wall ShopRite representatives from ShopRite/Wakefern and General Mills unveiled the Cheerios Box and presented a special edition to Monica who was one of four kids chosen in this tri-state area.

Monica is an eighth grade student who lives in Spring Lake Heights and has been deemed “a local hunger-fighting hero” by ShopRite and General Mills.  Monica brought an idea to her school to create ‘can art’ with donated canned goods. In this way, the students were not only challenged to design art with canned goods, but also to help those in need in our neighborhoods.  Close to 1800 pounds of food was collected!  Read the entire FoodBank press release.

Monica is pictured above at the ceremony with her parents Paul & Esther Murphy.
